WAC - Ware Assessment Centre logoCoVE - Children’s Care, Learning and Development

Welcome to the HRC Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) Website. HRC was awarded CoVE CoVE - Children’s Care, Learning and Development logostatus on 19th December 2005 for excellent work and achievement - in particular the NVQ provision for Childcare programmes through the Ware Assessment Centre – part of the Department of Children, Care and Health. The CoVE is one of only 18 childcare CoVEs countrywide and is the only one in Hertfordshire.

CoVEs are specialist areas of vocational provision characterised by close links between colleges, other providers, employers and the community. They aim to produce appropriately qualified and skilled workers with excellent employment and career prospects which meet the needs of the local economy.

The aim of the HRC Children’s Care, Learning and Development CoVE is to develop the partnership with employers to help more adults gain the skills needed to improve employability and employers’ productivity. As the CoVE progresses we will offer customer focussed, excellent quality, flexible training opportunities, to be delivered on and off site in conjunction with local employers. We have always focussed on widening participation in traditional childcare programmes but as part of the CoVE aim we want to attract additional students from a wider professional area such as foster carers, health visitor assistants, and ‘wraparound’ carers.

We will continue to develop accessible training pathways, to respond to Hertfordshire’s commitment to improving qualifications and status of childcare workers, and to meeting government targets for expansion of a trained childcare workforce.

Ware Assessment Centre currently offers child care NVQ programmes for people working in early years settings, playwork environments such as after-school clubs and holiday playschemes, with people who care for children in residential settings such as foster carers and childminders, or with children in health environments such as health visitor assistants or school nurse assistants. There are programmes for people supporting families, as well as people who support children in the school environment such as teaching assistants or learning support workers. For more information about our NVQ programmes please download the PDF below.

HRC’s CoVE is unique in that, in line with the new National Occupational Standards for child care workers, it focuses on people working with children from 0-18 years.

If you are working in such an environment and would like to know more about gaining qualifications which recognise your experience and expertise, please contact Ware Assessment Centre situated on the Ware site of Hertford Regional College on 01992 411938 or e-mail wac@hrc.ac.uk.
