An Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma is a qualification that prepares students to study at degree level. Whether your current qualifications do not fit with your desired career path, or you have not achieved a level 3 qualification, an Access to Higher Education Diploma may be for you!

There is no upper age limit for our Access to HE courses, nor do you need to require any UCAS points. Access to HE students will be in college for approximately two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays), completing a combination of classroom-based study as well as additional blended/home learning. This makes the courses ideal for those looking for the flexibility of part-time learning, whether it be around childcare or current job roles. Our Access to HE courses are delivered by experienced tutors and result in students achieving an Access Diploma which attracts 60 credits.

Along with studying an Access course at HRC, you will receive support throughout the whole process of completing UCAS forms, personal statements, and applications.

If you do not currently have the relevant qualifications, HRC’s Access to HE courses are the ideal route to help you get a step closer to your desired career destination.

The AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification offers opportunities to work in a variety of accounting/finance/business environments with employers from small partnerships to multinational companies.  Students from virtually any background have the opportunity to acquire accounting skills from Level 1 to Level 4 and can progress to University after Level 3 or 4, or onto other accounting qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW.  The college offers experienced accounting tutors with dedicated facilities to meet your needs.  Employers Value this qualification very highly.

State-of-the-art resources include a 3D printer, laser cutter, photography studio and darkroom, Mac suites and a model-making workshop. We are also proud to have the David Gentleman Gallery in which our students regularly exhibit and sell their work to our local communities.

Departments housed at the Ware campus include Photography, 3D Design (product, furniture and interior), Animation and Multimedia, Fashion, Graphic Design, Visual Merchandising and more.

HRC’s Art and Design courses include approved University of the Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body qualifications. The UAL Awarding Body is part of the University of Arts London, Europe’s largest specialist arts university.

Work Experience

Art and Design courses open up careers in fast-paced industries that are constantly searching for new talent, innovations and concepts to help create the next big design. As an Art and Design student, you will be prepared for work after studying us, by learning hands-on techniques, being commissioned to deliver projects and live briefs and devising innovative final major projects. These will develop vital business skills to help you reach your successful career direction. A great example of this is William, a 3D Design student who designed a GPS tracker for ships. Fifteen trackers have now gone into production and will be installed into ships, using the installation guide also created by William!

You may also have the opportunity to complete valuable work experience placements and live briefs. Previous opportunities have included:

  • Designing window displays for Harrods
  • Organising and attending community events and markets to sell your work through the Creative Enterprise pop-up shop

At HRC you’ll have access to the latest hardware and specialist software, including an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, RPG software, 3D modelling software, new robot kit, the latest Cisco equipment and suites of Macs and PCs. 

The mix of hands-on practical classes, alongside modules such as IT troubleshooting and repairs, developing working games or planning and managing computer projects, will help you to discover which areas of the industry you enjoy the most.

Work Experience

A mix of work experience opportunities and in-house projects will be available to help prepare you for work. The team at HRC have excellent relationships with local, national and international companies who can offer challenging work placements. Students also regularly welcome HRC alumni and industry professionals who give talks regarding their careers and provide advice on how to achieve goals. The team also have strong links with the University of the Third Age as the students provide support and advice in using technology.

In 2018, students were able to attend EGX Rezzed, London’s biggest games event, to get an even better insight into the industry. A little closer to home, you may also have the chance to work with HRC’s own IT team to learn the practical skills of being a technician.

There are wide and varied employment opportunities in Engineering and Motor Vehicle.

Our Engineering building with its well-equipped engineering workshops contain industry standard facilities, including arc and gas welding equipment, bench drilling machines, centre lathes, vertical milling machines, as well as various precision measuring equipment and hand tools. In the electronics workroom, you have access to CAD software and your designs can be brought to life using the 3D printer or the CNC machine that can be programmed to convert your designs to a 3D model.

The Motor Vehicle workshop is always bursting with cars to work on and comes complete with an MOT bay that has been fitted out to main dealer standards, in line with Vehicle and Operations Services Agency (VOSA) testing regulations.

Work Experience

In this department there is a strong focus on developing the practical skills you need to establish yourself in the workplace. Live projects will keep you focused on building your skills. Previous projects completed by our Engineering and Motor Vehicle students include working alongside the Cheshunt Fire and Rescue Service. Together they engineered a car that is taken to schools to demonstrate how the Fire and Rescue Service safely remove people from vehicles. Alongside this, Motor Vehicle students also offer in-house winter checks to HRC staff cars to ensure they are safe in the slightly more challenging weather!

With professional dance studios, a recording and TV studio, plus tutors with industry experience, you’ll learn the tricks of the trade in preparation for your career. The Michael Morpurgo Theatre, HRC’s 140 seat performance theatre, will allow you to showcase your talents with the help of the latest lighting and sound technology.

You couldn't ask for more specialist equipment at your fingertips than we have here. Our Music studio boasts a 64 multi-track digital desk, a huge range of dynamic and condenser microphones, tube microphone preamp, Orange & Marshall amplifiers, three digital desks, an analogue desk for recording live performances and a sound-proofed vocal booth to reduce the noise level to -30 DBS. All the practice rooms are also equipped with full acoustic drum kits, keyboards and amplifiers. 

In the Media department we have a fully-functioning TV studio, private editing facilities, Mac suites, broadcast-quality television production equipment, high-end filming equipment and a variety of professional post-production software. 

As a Media student you will learn how to plan productions effectively, produce/direct them and enter the post-production stage to create a final polished piece of work. You will be able to work on individual projects as well as collaborating with other students and community groups/organisations to bring productions to life and experience different parts of the Media industry. 

Our Media courses are industry recognised by ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK's screen-based industries and carries the ScreenSkills Select quality-mark which indicates courses best suited to prepare students for a career in the screen industries. This endorsement means that students have exclusive access to industry networking events, support groups, mentorships and workshops as part of their time on the courses.

Work Experience

As a Performing Arts or Music student, you’ll gain vital work experience including working on matinées and evening performances at both The Michael Morpurgo Theatre and other local theatres. HRC's Performing Arts students regularly tour local schools with productions and have previously visited Princess Alexandra Hospital to entertain the children's ward.

Our HND Music students were also proud to manage recording sessions for Lee Thompson & The Silencerz on two tracks. Lee is best known as the saxophonist and founding member of the band Madness and was very impressed with the professionalism of the students. Our students are in good company, walking in the footsteps of alumni such as George Ezra.

The Music students are also regularly employed by the college to perform at events including annual awards ceremonies, fairs and open days, as well as working with theatres and music venues. 

The Media department also has a great history of offering exciting and varied live briefs to students. A group of students recently worked with the HRC Marketing team to film an interview with Harlow MP Robert Halfon. Students in this area are also sought after by members of the community to film events, weddings and corporate videos. A great example of this is their partnership with Parcelforce. The students worked closely with a team from the company to devise, plan and produce films used for in-house security training.

Work experience opportunities are designed to develop your employability, personal and social skills as well as help you pursue your interests. These could include working on conservation projects alongside the Lea Valley and Woodland Management team or serving at The Café.

3. Independent living
Activities are developed to help promote your personal independence skills including social communication, budgeting, shopping, domestic skills and meal preparation.

4. Health and wellbeing
In this area, a focus is put on developing your core skills including healthy eating, fitness, support to manage medication, sexual health and managing emotions.

HRC’s dedicated facilities for Childcare and Health & Social Care immerse you in the industry to truly develop your practical skills. Our care suite mirrors a care home and hospital room and includes equipment used daily for patients, all of which combines to give you hands-on experience.

Our modern childcare suite has been designed to replicate a real life nursery with classrooms for children, complete with play and reading areas, outdoor facilities and teaching areas.

Work Experience

The team of teaching professionals have a huge wealth of experience in looking after children, young people and adults professionally and can share their industry expertise with you. They are also dedicated to enriching their students’ time at the college and they organise many activities throughout the academic year. Most recently, these have included university lecturer-led workshops on NHS career opportunities and real life scenario evenings with the local police, fire and ambulance crews. Work experience placements are also offered by a variety of facilities including schools, nurseries, elderly and residential homes and healthcare clinics. HRC is also pleased to offer placements in five local NHS hospitals in areas such as A&E and paediatrics.

Our Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Media Make-Up courses give you the opportunity to work in our exceptional on-site salon. With a total of eleven hairdressing and beauty salons, Inspires is one of the largest and most advanced salons of any college in the country and is open to members of the public. As a hairdresser or beauty therapist in the salon, you will be interacting with customers daily to not only hone your creative skills but improve your business understanding and customer service abilities. During your time at HRC, you will be taught by tutors and lecturers with a wealth of experience in the industry who have worked for high-end and well-known brands including MAC Cosmetics.

Work Experience

A wide range of opportunities are open to you in this department to build your employability skills, including workshops run by leading names in the industry and trips to prestigious establishments. There are also great chances to take part in exciting projects and events. For example, a previous group of students worked on the make-up for a fashion show organised by teenage cancer charity Teens Unite, hosted by fashion designer Karen Millen. Students will also be involved in community projects, most notably the annual Cancer Research Pamper Evening. Each year, Inspires partners with Cancer Research to host an evening of luxurious treatments delivered to customers by our students. Hair and Beauty students are also frequent winners at the annual HRC Diversity Awards where they regularly submit styles for a runway show that celebrates diversity.

Our exceptional on-site restaurant, The Atrium, is where you will be preparing, cooking, presenting and serving meals to the public. The standards are high at The Atrium as it has earned multiple awards including a Silver Hospitality Accreditation from People 1st and an AA College Award Rosette from The AA. The Atrium is also ranked the #1 restaurant in Broxbourne on TripAdvisor. During your time you will be supported by a team of experienced chefs and managers with a wealth of knowledge.

Work Experience

Catering and Hospitality students have previously worked alongside Masterchef finalists as well as frequently managed pop-up street food stalls at community events and enjoyed expert workshops from top chefs. To top it all off, Catering students regularly enter competitions whether that be the Annual Inter-College Patisserie competition (which our students won!) or national competitions such as Youth South African Chef of the Year.

EVENT MANAGEMENT

If you have a passion for managing events and see yourself as the next big events, wedding, festival or venue manager then our Events Management course will give you the opportunity to flex your planning, coordinating and networking skills. The course is a blend of classroom theory and practical activities. Students can go on to work within the industry or progress to our HND in Hospitality and Event Management.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Event Management students help to plan and run large scale events, past placements include Comic Con, Standon Calling, Dickensian Evening Ware and St Albans Fashion Week as well as hosting their own events during the year. 

Those taking on our HND in Hospitality and Event Management, will get even more opportunities to experience the hospitality industry. This includes trips to New York, work experience at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and days out tackling experiences like climbing the O2 building.

Our Sports courses are taught by experience tutors with industry experience who also continue to practice in fields such as sports coaching, fitness and sport massage. 

Our Public Services tutors have an impressive array of medals and commendations from their time in the Army and Police force. Their experiences range from frontline policing to CID, rising through the ranks to Detective Constable and Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police and serving in the British Army. When studying one of our Public Services courses, you will aim to lead effective teams, study key legal information and gain a clear, professional understanding of what it takes to be a leading member of the Public Services. You will also meet guest speakers from local services and spend time within a working environment experiencing what it is like in the roles you aspire to hold.

Work Experience

Our Sports courses focus on the practical application of science and nutrition to give you the theoretical training you need to ensure you can stand out from the crowd. However, it's not all work and no play - students also get to try out the latest sports and leisure activities including kayaking, surfing and indoor skydiving. 

As a Sports student, you will have access to a number of local facilities offering insight into employment within the sports and fitness sector. These experiences will help you decide on your future career progressions and develop an understanding of what it takes to be professional and successful.

If you're taking on a Public Services course, you will be inducted with Bootcamp - a residential trip at the start of the year which truly puts you through your paces. This is complemented with ongoing work experience throughout the year including stewarding and assisting the police at community events. More recently, the Public Services students worked with local police and fire services to enact real life scenarios of accidents and casualties.

The travel industry is beginning to bounce back after lockdown with TUI and Jet2 saying after the lockdown roadmap dates were set out that bookings increased by 500%. You will be a part of rebuilding this exciting industry.

The course will capture the real essence of the whole industry and give you an overview of every part of the industry. We are working with two travel partners: Travel Counsellors, who book 450,000 holidays a year, and ABTA, who provide guidance and advise in the industry. This qualification not only gives you this overview but hands on work experience.

We believe that to understand the tourism industry is about getting involved, so alongside the theory you will be able to experience how the tourism industry works with educational visits, guest speakers and work experience.

We will have a designated suite for students to use for this work experience and you will be turning transforming it as our own travel retail business and have the opportunity to use in house training programmes and booking holidays.

The team at HRC have a varied background working in the industry including working in the UK and Abroad in roles from resort reps, travel agents, tour operators and visitor attractions. Not only will you have access to work experience at the College through working with Travel Counsellors and ABTA but alongside your qualification you will take part in trips and visits both in the UK and abroad (COVID allowing) and see behind the scenes in the travel industry. The opportunities for you are endless with our range of workshops. From a large bricklaying studio to a dedicated carpentry floor to electrical workshops all the resources you need to build a brighter future are at your fingertips. Our electrical workshops were renovated in 2018 ensuring they are of the highest standard possible to give you the best learning environment.

Our plumbing study programmes are delivered in partnership with CK Assessment and Training in Nazeing who provide exceptional on-site facilities and a team of trainers and assessors with years of industry experience.

The department teams, themselves experts in their trade, work with local employers to embed work experience opportunities, which means that our study programmes are relevant and enable you to gain valuable real-life experience alongside the qualifications.

Work Experience

This department has a great history of creating live briefs and opening doors to community contacts to help develop your real life experience of work. This includes working with Lea Valley Park to restore community land, as well as working with teams in the college to redesign, renovate and create new structures on campus. Students have also worked to support the community arts venue Southern Maltings which repairs and renovations.

Our part-time English and Maths programmes give you the opportunity to improve your grades and enhance your employability.

We offer two-course options: the first is an adult provision where you can attain an English/Maths qualification. The second is for students who are studying a full-time course at HRC and have not attained a grade C/4 in GCSE English/Maths. The programme will be embedded within their vocational course to help them achieve their GCSE English/Maths.

The opportunity to study English and Maths will be offered at two different levels: Functional Skills and GCSE. All courses have the option to attend day or evening classes.

You can study with like-minded individuals in a supportive environment, where our tutors will strive to help you achieve.

We have a range of ESOL courses to suit all abilities from learners with no English ability who want to learn English to integrate into British society to advanced ESOL learners, looking to progress their careers or move onto Higher Education.

Pre-entry ESOL for Life Skills and Social English – designed for learners with limited or no understanding of the English language to develop speaking and listening, reading and writing skills to help with integration into British society before moving onto the next level.

Entry Level ESOL for Employability Development – designed for learners with a basic understanding of the English language who want to develop their ability to read and write in English and speak the language to improve their employability skills and further integrate into British society.

ESOL Qualification for Career Development and Progression – designed for learners who want to develop their knowledge and ability in the English language and are looking to achieve a recognised qualification to help them with their career development or progression onto GCSE or Higher Education. Qualification available at Entry Level 3 or Level 1. 

Key Employability Skills

Confidence to speak in English with native English speakers, using the correct grammar and tenses for social English and the workplace.

Ability to read in English and extend your vocabulary. Be able to read and understand signs, forms, letters, news articles and informative text.

Confidence to write in English using correct sentence structure, punctuation, tenses, and grammar. Be able to fill in forms and applications and write letters and emails.

To Apply

You can apply for the course online or go to our Information Centre at either Broxbourne or Ware College to collect a paper application. After applying you will be invited to the College for an interview with an ESOL tutor to check your level of English. You will also by assessed by our Information Team who will check your passport, Home Office documents, that you have been resident in the country for 3 years, evidence of employment benefits or low wage. The interview and assessment can take up to 2 hours, you can bring a friend or family member who can speak English on your behalf at the interview and assessment.

Fees

Fees apply to all our ESOL courses. Fee remission could be available for learners that can provide evidence of receiving Universal Credit or Job Seekers Allowance or earn less than £17,374 per year could be eligible for fee remission. Learners that can provide Home Office evidence of asylum, refugee, humanitarian, exceptional or indefinite leave to enter or remain status (including Calais leave to remain), could also be eligible for fee remission. You will need to have been resident in the country for 3 years.

We offer students with an interest in Science the opportunity to progress from Level 2 through to Higher Education.

At Level 2, we offer GCSE Science as a standalone qualification to part-time students.

At Level 3, we now offer T-Level Science, which is new for 2024. 

We also offer an Extended Degree in Science, a 1-year programme validated by the University of Hertfordshire, offering a step into a full degree programme.

All our Science courses are taught by highly experienced tutors who also have a range of industry experience to draw upon.

FE Colleges

Legally, FE colleges are incorporated through the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 and recognised as part of the FE sector. The powers of FE Corporations are set out in the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. The principal powers are that a further education corporation may:

  • Provide further and higher education
  • Provide secondary education to those aged fourteen years and above
  • Participate in the provision of secondary education at a school
  • Supply goods or services in connection with their provision of education

Governance is the way in which an organisation is directed and controlled. A corporation determines the rules and procedures for making decisions on corporate affairs including the process through which strategic objectives are set and performance monitored; and it is responsible for the quality of the service which is provided to students and stakeholders as well as ensuring the effective use of resources. It has six principal responsibilities:

  • To determine the educational mission and character of the college
  • To approve the Quality Strategy
  • To be satisfied as to the effective and efficient use of resources
  • To approve the annual budget
  • Senior staff appointments (Principal and Deputy Principal)
  • The framework for pay and conditions of service for all staff

Our Corporation

The Hertford Regional College Corporation (The Board) is made up of 15 members, comprising 10 independent members from the local and business communities, along with two staff and two student members from the College and the Principal & Chief Executive.

Our Governance Structure

The Board meets four times a year and it has an established committee structure to assist in the fulfillment of its responsibilities. The Committees meet throughout the year to carry out clearly defined roles on behalf of the Board. These are:

 Audit Committee A statutory committee responsible for providing assurance to the Board on the system of internal controls, risk management and financial probity
Quality, Standards & Business Planning Responsible for advising the Board on the overall quality, standards and performance of the College including its responsiveness to learners and employers 
Remuneration Committee  Responsible for making recommendations to the Board relating to the pay, conditions of service and performance targets for Senior Post-Holders and the Clerk to the Corporation
Resources Committee  Responsible for considering the College's finance management and financial planning arrangements, HR strategy and making recommendations to the Board 
Search & Governance Committee  Responsible for making recommendations to the Board about good governance practice and the appointment of new members and ensuring fair and equitable processes are in place for the search for new governors
