UCAS Code: W216
Institution Code: HERTS H36
Campus name: Hertford Regional College
Campus code: H

On this course you will have the opportunity to develop your creative and technical skills in graphic design. You will undertake a range of vocational projects, which challenge you to provide communication and design solutions in the areas of publishing, advertising, corporate branding, packaging, publicity information and digital illustration, as well as new and emerging media. You will learn how to use a range of digital and non-digital techniques to design solutions.

Ideas are at the heart of the course and there is a strong emphasis on practical experimental work. You will be challenged to respond to vocational based briefs in a creative and considered way, evaluating and analysing your work as you progress. This course will develop both your creative and technical skills and at all stages you will be taught how to use established and emerging media through workshops, industry guest speakers, tutorials and seminars delivered by experienced industry professionals.

Through contextual studies and an ongoing seminar programme you will be introduced to the issues of analysis, aesthetic and theoretical frameworks as used in this industry. Through the course's emphasis on work-based learning you will be encouraged to find work placements and job shadowing with industry professionals. You will be working in teams to simulate industry practice across the two years and hone your presentation and communication skills. Through our excellent industry links, both local and national, you will be regularly visited and supported by leading members of the design community.

What makes the Foundation Degree in Graphic Design at HRC special?

You will have an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification in two years of full-time study and the knowledge and skills to embark on a career in Graphic Design.

This course allows students to develop in depth understanding, by working both independently and collaboratively with other discipline areas such as Three Dimensional Design and Visual Merchandising and through practical studio practice.

You can learn while you earn; we have a Creative Enterprise Pop-Up Shop that 'pops up' at youth markets in the local community, within shops and empty shop units, at external exhibitions at both local and London venues as well as having an online presence. The day to day running of the shop contributes to the Work Based Learning module and is managed by a team of students. This is a great experience and excellent opportunity to develop and enhance your entrepreneurial skills and promote yourself as up and coming designer by marketing and selling your own products.

You will take part in various industry live briefs and in prestigious national and international design competitions. These include D&AD New Blood, YCN Student Awards, ISTD Awards, The RSA Student Design Awards and illustration competitions such at The Penguin Random House Student Design Award.

You will also have the opportunity to manage, curate and finance your own exhibitions both independently and collaboratively; exhibiting your work professionally in our in-house David Gentleman Gallery as well as at external venues.

You will have smaller class sizes, more tutor contact and extra support if the need is identified.

You will learn in subject specific studios and workshops with access to the latest equipment supervised by trained technicians. Equipment available to students includes a laser cutter, a 3D printer, enamelling/pewter kiln, silversmithing tools, screen printing table, vacuum former, heat press, printing presses, Mac suites and a photography studio.
