The HND in Photography offers you the unique opportunity to develop your own signature style and visual language in the creation of a professional photography portfolio. This course will be delivered in a brand new professional photographic suite in a new state of the art Creative Enterprise Campus in Ware.

This two year programme explores analytical and critical approaches to photographic imagery, together with the study of the critical context of photography. You will develop your technical, darkroom and studio skills whilst exploring images from a critical stance. At the end of the course you will be expected to create a professional portfolio of work to assist you in pursuing a successful career in the industry.

  • Our students create amazing work - previous students have worked on editorial briefs, taken landscape photographs on a college trip to Iceland and collaborated with fashion students on a fashion photography brief.
  • You will build your own portfolio of work and website and learn how to market yourself as a photographer.
  • You will work with employers on commercial photographic projects gaining valuable work experience.

What can I do next?

Entry into the photography world is always competitive and there are particular employment routes which may be suitable for graduates of this course. It may be possible to 'top-up' to an honours degree at another Higher Education Institution.

What will I be doing?

Our goal is to provide you with the focused knowledge and understanding of photography needed to qualify for entry-level, industry positions as Commercial or Fine Art Photographers, Picture Editors, Picture Researchers, Digital Retouchers, Digital Operators, Photographic Assistants, Professional Photographic Fine Art Printers.

In addition to technical proficiency and creative development, your education will help you develop critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills that contribute to life learning, providing you with tools to help sustain a long an productive professional career.

Added Extras

You will have the opportunity to develop your critical appreciation of professional art and design, there may be opportunities to attend exhibitions in the United Kingdom or further afield to places such as Barcelona, Iceland and Berlin. These visits are not mandatory and the costs will be additional to the course fee. Students will be given sufficient notice to budget for these events.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods such as; development of photographic techniques, practice in photographic disciplines, developing exhibition projects, responding to commissions and live briefs, written presentations, portfolios and log books. Grades are awarded for evidence of professionalism, research, technical skills, analysis and communication skills.

Entry requirements

Preparation - You are required to attend an interview with a portfolio including examples of your photography.

Entry to the course is based on a minimum of 48 UCAS points at a level 3 usually. This could include BTEC National Diploma in Photography, Art Design, an International Baccalaureate or an equivalent qualification along with successful interview. Hertford Regional College welcomes applications from applicants with relevant industry experience.

What do I need to bring?

You are expected to provide your own photography kit - DSLR Camera.

Fee Information

£6000 per annum is the fee for HNDs at HRC in 2024/25. Full and part- time students are normally eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. See https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance

There may be opportunities for trips and visits organised, these will be at an additional charge for the students.
