HND Games Design & Animation is a skills-based course that provides the practical expertise and employability skills needed within the multi-billion-pound Games Industry. You will be able to focus on you own individual projects, creating 2D, 3D and XR games to develop your own portfolio and personal game style. You'll also work in small agile groups, where you will perform multiple roles to have a greater ownership of what you have created.

You will be working on live briefs from the gaming industry, the course will provide you with the necessary game development, designing, animating and scripting skills. It is a challenging programme, which focusses on developing your core artistic, design, and technical skills including the creation of animation rigging and game content using Unity, Autodesk Maya, and the Adobe Creative Suite.

With access to excellent facilities and free high-end technology (including an educational license grant provided by Unity), support from experienced staff with industry links, you will succeed with the skills and tools needed to top-up your degree or jump into industry.

What can I do next?

The course covers the full game development pipeline, from planning and concept to publishing. Project management, critical thinking with professional skills for the sector, the course will prepare learners to join a team within AAA, independent or develop their own projects.

What will I be doing?

You will learn the fundamental concepts of gameplay, design, prototyping and scripting. Learn key drawing skills, visual design skills, conceptual approaches and software enabling you to develop video games. As well as this, you will gain a solid grounding into the principles and processes of Animation for video games and be introduced to traditional animation techniques and software.

You will produce digital and non-digital outcomes demonstrating your technical understanding and conceptual skills.

Added Extras

You will have the opportunity to develop your critical appreciation of professional Games Design. There may be opportunities to attend game/animation conventions and exhibitions in the United Kingdom or further afield to places such as Bilbao, Valencia or Praque. These visits are not mandatory and the costs will be additional to the course fee. Students will be given sufficient notice to budget for these events.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through course work alone. Grades are awarded for evidence of professionalism, research, technical skills, analysis and communication skills. Work is graded through a Pass, Merit and Distinction framework.

Entry requirements

48 UCAS points from an appropriate level 3 qualification (UAL/ BTEC Extended Diploma or 2 A levels) and GCSE minimum grade C in English and Maths or equivalent. Applicants who can demonstrate previous relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.

What do I need to bring?

You will need either a USB with 32GB or a hard drive for storing course work. As a student you may be able to download some applications for free.

Fee Information

£6000 per annum is the fee for HNDs at HRC in 2024/25. Full and part- time students are normally eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. See https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance

There may be opportunities for trips and visits organised, these will be at an additional charge for the students.
