Art & Design

We will be enrolling on our 2022/23 Art & Design Part Time Courses soon.  If you would like to be kept up to date regarding enrolment please complete an enquiry form.

This course is suitable for beginners to upholstery and those with some previous experience.

The course is broken down in to 2 parts;

Part A - Drop in Seat Dining Chair (weeks 1 & 2)
Students will be introduced to traditional upholstery tools, techniques and materials whilst reupholstering and covering a drop in seat dining chair.

Part B - Stitched and Stuff Over Dining Chair (weeks 3 - 7)
During this part of the course, students will become more familiar with the tools, techniques and materials used in Part A to reupholster and cover a stitched and stuff over dining chair.  Students will also improve and condition furniture wood.

What do I need to bring?

Part A
A dining chair with upholstered seat but no upholstered back.
A drop-in seat is a seat pad on a frame which is detachable from the chair frame. It sits in a wooden platform. The wooden structure of the chair is visible round the edge of the seat. If you turn the chair upside down the seat pad should come out easily.

The stuffing can be in any condition but please make sure the seat pad frame is sound, ie. the joints are not loose or broken.

Do not strip the chair beforehand. We will do this in the first class.

Students will also need to provide top fabric of their choice (50cm x 50cm).  Suitability of fabric will be discussed in the first week for use within week 2.

Part B
A dining chair with upholstered seat but no upholstered back.
A stitched stuff-over seat has no springs so is quite thin and firm. Typically, the top fabric is fixed on the underside of the chair. There is no visible wooden frame around the seat.

The upholstery can be in any condition but please make sure that the chair is structurally sound, ie the joints are not loose.

Do not strip the chair beforehand. We will do this in the first class.

Students will also need to provide top fabric of their choice (60cm x 60cm).  Suitability of fabric will be discussed on the course.

All other materials are included in the course fee.

Basic tools and equipment will be provided for use within the class, however advice and guidance can be given if you wish to purchase your own tool kit.

If you are unable to provide your own chair(s), chairs for upcycling can be provided for an additional charge.  Please contact us for further information.
