What can I do next?
When students complete a T Level study programme and have achieved threshold competence, they will be able to choose between moving into:
- A skilled occupation - Level 3 Early Years Practitioner
- Higher or degree level apprenticeships
- Higher level technical study, including higher education (University)
What will I be doing?
This is a two-year programme, with 60% in college (4 days) and 40% on work placement (1 day)
This course is an in depth look at working within the childcare industry, requiring extra reading, homework and independent study. It is advised that part time work is not undertaken alongside this course.
You will attend a real-life work environment for your work placement (an Early Years setting) where you will need to complete at least 750 hours to obtain threshold competence. Throughout this time, you will be observed and assessed on a regular basis and meetings will be held with your assessor, your mentor at the Early Years Setting and yourself, to discuss your progress. These meetings will be recorded and discussed with your Programme Manager
In college, you will learn core knowledge and occupational specialist knowledge and skills (detailed below) The curriculum is preparing learners to progress onto Higher Education or employment within a childcare related profession. Learners will need to be able to have a sound knowledge of the different core elements and occupational specialism studied when they finish the end of the programme and achieve threshold competence.

- PO4: Safeguard and promote the health, safety, and wellbeing of children
- PO5: Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, carers, and other professionals to support children's development
Added Extras
The qualification will support learners to develop interpersonal skills such as resilience, professional conduct/behaviour, and confidence, as well as academic skills ensure that learners are 'employer ready' upon completion and ready for their next steps.
The core elements and occupational specialism covered on the course will equip learners with the knowledge and employability skills needed to prepare them for progressing onto Higher Education or employment within the childcare sector. The extra activities/experiences planned, such as trips and visits, guest speakers, group tutorials, skills workshops and work experience will help to underpin learners knowledge and support them to develop the skills and behaviour required to progress and succeed towards their intended destination
How will I be assessed?
Year 1 - Core Elements including knowledge and skills comprises of 2 written examination and an employer set project which is set by NCFE
Year 2 - Occupational Specialism and Core Skills comprises of synoptic assessments, practical assignment and Observation, assessment and meetings relating to competence
Entry requirements
- Learners must be at least 16 years old and have attained 5 GCSE at Grade 4 (including English and maths)
- A satisfactory reference from previous school
- Attend an interview further to which a written English and maths assignment will be assessed
- Learners will be subjected to an enhanced DBS check to confirm their suitability to work with children

Fee Information
Free to Home students under 19 on 31st August 2023.
If you are a Home student aged 19 or over on the 31st August 2023, you may be liable to pay approximately £2,500 tuition fee for a Level 2 qualification and approximately £5,000 for a Level 3 qualification (these were the tuition fees for 2022/2023 and could be subject to change for 2023/2024).
If you are aged 19-23 you may also be entitled to free tuition if the course you choose is on a government-approved list and the qualification is your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.
If you are aged over 24 and you have not achieved a full Level 3 qualification you may be entitled to free tuition if the qualification is listed on the Government Free courses for jobs list. Similarly, if you already hold a Level 3 qualification (or above) and meet the Adult Education Budgets definition of unemployed or are in receipt of low wage, you may also be entitled to free tuition.
You may also be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable.
These fees are indicative of the 2024-25 costs and may be subject to change
Additional Costs
You will be required to pay the fees for:
- An Enhanced DBS certificate
- Kit for wearing during your placement hours (comprising of a polo shirt and hoodie)
