Most people who grow up in the UK have enjoyed the warmth and certainty of a brick home and it may for them hold a subtle, almost nostalgic quality. A mainstay of our construction industry, bricklaying has existed for thousands of years with evidence of its use dating back as far as the Roman Empire.
On this course you will be working to recognised industrial standards and will gain crucial underpinning knowledge and skills to prepare you for a career as a bricklayer. HRC works closely with key employers in the local area to support not only an outstanding training facility but also progressive routes into employment.

What can I do next?
After completing this course there are a number of options available. Depending on your final grade and attitude you could move onto a bricklaying apprenticeship, move straight into employment or continue training towards supervisory and management positions and qualifications within the construction industry.
What will I be doing?
This course is a hands-on, practical course which is studied by people who want to be bricklayers. The course consists of seven units which are divided into underpinning and knowledge units. You will be constructing various brickwork models to current industry standards. You will gain hand skills and knowledge in the following subjects:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
- Knowledge of principles of building, information, quantities and communication
- Construct block walling
- Construct brick walling
- Construct cavity walling
- Setting out for basic masonry structures up to damp proof course
- Mix construction materials
Given the practical nature of the course and the measuring and setting out involved, a range of mathematical and problem solving skills will be developed.
On top of the subjects above, a minimum of 30 hours work experience will be expected to complete the course. This key factor further supports employment into the construction industry.
Added Extras
As a full time student you will be engaging in various enrichment trips to manufacturing sites, construction sites and construction exhibitions. Guest speakers, past learners and employers frequently visit the college to support learners.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be carried out throughout the ourse using projects, end of unit tests and practical assessments. You will also be offered the opportunity to undertake the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS card) training to support your career within construction.

Completion of a level 1 brickwork qualification or relevant prior knowledge or experience within the industry
What do I need to bring?
Students will need to purchase a protective uniform and toe protective footwear to conform with personal protective equipment in our workshops as well as a recommended reference book and basic stationery. Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred. Trips will be organised throughout the year and may incur a cost.
