This City & Guilds level 2 diploma (6706-23) is the industry recognised qualification for trades people wanting to work in the construction industry.  Well trained and skilled carpenters can enjoy excellent employment and are well paid, typically £200 per day.

This level 2 diploma is designed to develop your skills and the knowledge needed to build a career in the industry as a carpenter.  You will study both practical and knowledge units.  On completion of this diploma you will be able to go into the workplace, become an apprentice or progress onto the next level of training.  The course runs over 2 1/2 days plus any maths and English you may need.

What can I do next?

After completing this course there are several options available.  Depending on your final grade and attitude you could move onto a carpetry or joinery apprenticeship.  Successful students may also move straight into employment or continue training towards supervisory and management positions and qualifications in the construction industy.

What will I be doing?

You will be developing industry standard measuring, cutting and manufacturing skills in our amazing, well equipped carpentry and joinery workshops.  The level 2 City & Guilds study programme will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge including:

  • 1st and 2nd fixing
  • carcassing
  • maintenance
  • stairs
  • kitchen fitting
  • floors
  • circular saw
  • heath &safety in the construction industry
  • principles of construction

As part of the programme of study you will be required to complete 30 hours of construction related work experience, 30 hours of independent study (online) and attend tutorial sessions.

This course requires significant home study online to develop the knowledge required for exams.

Added Extras

As a full time student you will have the opportunity to take part in additional activities including sports, gym and enrichment activities alongside your main programme.  Depending on your prior achievement you can re-sit GCSE English and/or maths.

How will I be assessed?

The 17 practical assessments will take place throughout the course.  Knowledge wil be assessed at the end of each unit and there are 2 exams to pass.  This is a big course so good attendance and compliance to safety practices throughout the course are also required.  Additionally you will study English and/or maths if you don't yet have GCSE at grade 4 or above.

Entry requirements

Completion of a level 1 Carpentry qualification or relevant prior knowledge or experience within the industry

What do I need to bring?

You will need to purchase a protective uniform and toe protective footwear to conform with personal protective equipment in our workshops as well as a recommended reference book and basic stationery.  Any trips organised throughout the year may incur a further cost.
