The programme has been devised in accordance with the University of Hertfordshire's graduate attributes of programmes of study and provides students with the knowledge, scientific academic and independent study skills to embark on a higher education programme in the sciences to appropriate Honours degree programmes. You will be enabled to develop knowledge, understanding and investigative skills relevant to a broad education in the medicine and allied courses supported to develop transferable skills and attributes necessary for your future as a student.

What will I be doing?

Hertford Regional College is a vocational college with a real strength in developing the knowledge and skills you need to prepare you for further study and work. You will be learning in both classrooms and in facilities that are similar to those you will meet in the workplace. Throughout the course you will experience a range of practical and theoretical learning methods. These might include: small group activities in class, group discussions, practical application of skills, individual presentations, one-to-one discussions, written work in a variety of different formats, learning from visiting speakers / practitioners, educational trips and visits as well as e-learning methods to access resources and complete assessments.

Students are taught over two semesters (A and B). In semester A core introductory modules are studied in biology, chemistry and physics. In semester B, students will take one core module (Investigative Project) and choose a further three modules depending on the Honours degree they intend to progress to once the Extended Degree has been successfully completed. There is no final award at the end of the Extended Degree Science Initial Year, nor are any interim awards available to students.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is majorly through coursework, practical and examination (Semester B) which are carried out through individual work, group work, presentations, assessed practicals, online quizzes, essays, multiple choice questions, open book assessments, closed book assessments, self-assessment, peer-assessment etc.

An overall pass grade in 120 credits is the minimum requirement for progression to Year 1 of participating programmes, with some requiring higher specific grades and/or the successful completion of an interview for progression, according to the tariff set each year.

Entry requirements

48 UCAS points

IB - 48 points with a minimum of 1 HL subject at grade 4 or above (with the remaining points to come from a combination of HL, SL and Core).

GCSE Maths, English Language and Science at grade 4 or above.
