Pre-Entry ESOL is perfect for learners with very little or no English. It is designed as an introduction to the English language and will teach you about British values, traditions, culture and will help with your social integration into British society. It will develop life skills such as going to the doctors or the shops and social English such as speaking to English parents in the playground or colleagues in the workplace. You will have lots of opportunities to practise your spoken ability in English as well as learning the basic vocabulary to read and write in English.
What can I do next?
On successful completion of Pre-Entry ESOL, you can then progress onto Entry Level ESOL for Employability Development or the ESOL Qualification for Career Development and Progression which can lead to either English Functional Skills or a GCSE in English Language.
What will I be doing?
You will build your vocabulary, your confidence and the skills required for everyday communication in English and integration into British society.
- Term 1 will begin with an introduction to the alphabet, colours, numbers, time, food, and drink. You will learn the difference between verbs, nouns, adjectives and how to use the correct present and simple tenses as well as the use of capital letters and full stops
- Term 2 will develop your speaking and listening skills. You will learn how to ask questions in the correct tenses. There will be lots of opportunities for role play around speaking in shops, the school playground, public transport, the doctors or the council
- Term 3 will develop your reading and writing skills so you can read signs and letters and fill in forms and applications
How will I be assessed?
You will be set targets and assessed at the end of each term, on achieving your targets you will receive an HRC Certificate of Achievement. In term 1 you will be assessed against your speaking and listening, reading, and writing skills at pre-entry level. Term 2 will assess your speaking and listening skills for life skills and social English and term 3 will assess your reading and writing skills for life skills and social English.
Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements for this course, and we accept all learners with very little or no English ability. You can apply for the course online or go to our Information Centre at either Broxbourne or Ware College to collect a paper application. After applying you will be invited to the College for an interview with an ESOL tutor to check your level of English. You will also by assessed by our Information Team who will check your passport, Home Office documents, that you have been resident in the country for 3 years, evidence of employment benefits or low wage. The interview and assessment can take up to 2 hours, you can bring a friend or family member who can speak English on your behalf at the interview and assessment.
What do I need to bring?
You will need to have a real passion to learn English and some time to do homework and practise your English outside of the classroom. You will need to be willing to do group work and take part in role plays to develop your speaking and listening skills. You will be expected to attend every week or notify your tutor for reason of absence, failure to do so could result in you being withdrawn and refunds cannot be issued for non-attendance.The college will provide you with worksheets and writing books, you will need to bring your own pens. You will be provided with a student email and shown how to use your emails. This course is designed to be taught in the classroom with an ESOL tutor and a group of learners (maximum class sizes of 16) however please be aware that if the Government or the Local Authority announces a lockdown due to the Coronavirus, classes will move to online learning. You will be given a student email account and access to Office 365 at the start of your course and shown how to work these, so you are ready to complete classes and learning online if needed, at any time throughout the year.
Fee Information
£225 for the year, this includes all assessment fees and certificates. Please note, refunds cannot be issued on the grounds of personal reasons or personal change in circumstances, once the course has started. Learners that can provide evidence that they receive Universal Credit or Job Seekers Allowance or earn less than £17,374.50 per year could be eligible for fee remission. Learners that can provide Home Office evidence of asylum, refugees, humanitarian, exceptional or indefinite leave to enter or remain status (including Calais leave to remain), could also be eligible for fee remission. You will need to have been resident in the country for 3 years.
