Studying for a Functional Skills maths qualification is a fantastic way of improving your basic maths skills to benefit day to day life and increase employment and education opportunities. The topics covered will be commonplace in both work and at home and will provide you with the confidence to complete mathematical problems independently.
A Functional Skills maths qualification is recognised by employers, colleges and universities so it has the opportunity to become a positive stepping stone to career progression or further education.

We offer both entry level and level one Functional Skills maths qualifications, which means that there will be something suitable for all.

What will I be doing?
Throughout your time on the Functional Skills maths program you can expect to cover topics such as:
-Fractions, percentages and ratios - how to calculate a fraction, percentage or ratio of a given quantity.
-Area, perimeter and volume, how to calculate the area, perimeter and volume of both common and compound shapes.
-Metric units of measure, how to convert between various units of measure and read scales to be able to identify different measures accurately.
These topics will be delivered to you over the period of 2 terms, usually over 2.5 hours per-week.
Added Extras, the provision of FS maths is planned so that learners also have the opportunity to study English or GCSE Science at the same time if motivation and aspirations required such. This would be discussed at interview.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed via two exam papers (Weighted as 75% calculator, 25% non-calculator). You will have a number of opportunities to sit these examinations throughout the academic year.
Entry requirements
On application you will be invited to take an interview and maths assessment. This will allow our Tutors to assess your current level and will indicate if you are suitable for the course or if an alternative maths programme may initially be required.

What do I need to bring?
Basic stationary such as a pen, pencil and ruler. You will also need a calculator.
Fee Information
This course is free to enrol onto, however there is a £10 fee to cover the cost of any exercise and text books.
These fees are indicative of the 2024-25 costs and may be subject to change
