Apprenticeships

What is an apprenticeship?

Hiring an apprentice is a great way to recruit new talent for your business, or support the progression of existing team members. It's a flexible way of generating the skills you need to stay competitive. Apprenticeships can also improve the productivity and effectiveness of your existing staff.

The apprentice will spend four days at work and one day in training, either on your premises or in College. They must be in paid employment for at least 30 hours per week, which includes their training day. Our apprenticeship programmes last between one and four years depending on the sector and level.

Hiring an apprentice has never been easier
Our dedicated apprenticeship team will advertise your vacancy and match potential pre-selected candidates to your specific needs and requirements.

For further information, please see our Step by Step Guide to Employing an Apprentice.

We provide ongoing support from the moment you decide to take on an apprentice. Our thorough recruitment process involves criteria checks prior to introducing you to an applicant, to best match their skills and your requirements.

Apprenticeships: Funding Guide for Employers

The National Apprenticeship Service has published a Funding Guide for Employers to support discussions with employees aged 24 and over working towards Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships. The guide highlights the benefits to businesses of employees working towards Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships and the different funding options available. Visit www.gov.uk for more information.

Additional Funding for Non-Levy Employers

Non-levy employers (who have more than 50 employees) the government will fund at least 95% of the training costs.

For smaller businesses (who have less than 50 employees) that take on an apprentice who is under 19 on the start date of the apprenticeship programme, the government will fund 100% of the training, meaning that it is free to the employer and the apprentice.

All businesses, levy payers or not, that take on an apprentice who is under 19 on the start date of the apprenticeship programme will receive an incentive payment. The first part of £500 is payable when the apprentice has completed 3 months in learning and the second part of £500 is payable once 12 months are completed.
