The Level 3 Creative Media Production course at Hertford Regional College is designed to equip you with all of the skills necessary to become a filmmaker. Across the two-year qualification you will develop a wide variety of skills for you to become successful within the Film and Television industries in the UK. As a student on this course, you will undertake a wide variety of practical projects to advance your skills and knowledge to flex your creative muscles and to become an employable and creative member of the industry.

The UK Film and TV industry is a growing sector, and now is the prime time to start thinking about training for careers in the screen industries. In 2022, there were a record number of 86,000 jobs across 16,000 production companies contributing over £12.5 billion to the UK economy. Most UK Film and TV jobs are located in London and the South East and, from our Broxbourne Campus, the heart of the Film and TV industry is less than 30 minutes away by train, alongside state of the art Hollywood and Netflix studios 15 minutes down the A10. 

The course uses industry standard equipment and resources and is designed and ran by industry professionals, with over a combined 20 year's worth of experience in the film and TV industry. By the end of the programme, you will have a thorough understanding of core principles, practices, and theories for you to produce a whole range of media products, such as Music Videos, Short Films, Documentaries, Multi-Camera Studio Shows, Scripts, Advertisements, and more! All alongside developing your portfolio of work experience by working with real-world clients and industry professionals.

What will I be doing?

Year 1 is an introduction to all the requirements of the industry, from Camera, Lighting, Sound, Editing & Post-Production to developing research skills, understanding the industry, scriptwriting, idea development, directing, producing and more.

You will undertake a series of practical assignments such as:

  • Music Videos Production
  • Documentary Storytelling
  • Short Film Production
  • Final Major Project 1

You will also attend workshops focussing on developing single and multi-camera techniques, sound design, cinematography, and colour correction & grading.

Year 2 of the course focusses on teaching and developing more advanced skills in film practice based on the knowledge and skills learnt within the first year of study, specialising in areas of film making of interest to you, as well as preparing you for your next steps - whether it's working in industry, university, or apprenticeships - by developing your professional, industry, and transferable skills.

You will undertake projects such as:

  • A Self-Directed Project
  • A Multi-Camera Magazine Show
  • The Specialist Study
  • Final Major Project 2

Across the two-year qualification you will obtain a Level 3 Diploma (90-credits) and the Level 3 Extended Diploma (180-credits), graduating with the equivalent of three A Levels.

How will I be assessed?

You will learn and study through a series of lectures, workshops, and tutorials to develop your knowledge and skills in Film & TV production, alongside industry visits, guest speakers, film screenings, and networking events. As part of the course, we emulate the industry experience as close as possible. All assessments are project based and there are no formal exams as part of the course. As part of each assessment, you will - and are encouraged to - work to and present information in-line with industry standards and expectations.

Entry requirements

To take on this course you will need:

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above (including English) or a Level 2 at Merit level or above.
  • To attend a Course Introduction Meeting
    (We also welcome applications from students with relevant experience or qualifications.)

After a successful Course Introduction Meeting, you will also be invited to a Taster Day to get a sense of what a typical lesson looks like! You can also attend New Student Day in the Summer to meet your future course mates.

What do I need to bring?

There is a small cost for essential course equipment (Hard Drive, SD Card, and a set of Headphones) and for optional trips that take place during the year. The cost for equipment is not expected to exceed £90, and financial support is available if required.

Fee Information

Free to Home students under 19 on 31st August 2023.
 
If you are a Home student aged 19 or over on the 31st August 2023, you may be liable to pay approximately £2,500 tuition fee for a Level 2 qualification and approximately £5,000 for a Level 3 qualification (these were the tuition fees for 2022/2023 and could be subject to change for 2023/2024).

If you are aged 19-23 you may also be entitled to free tuition if the course you choose is on a government-approved list and the qualification is your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.

If you are aged over 24 and you have not achieved a full Level 3 qualification you may be entitled to free tuition if the qualification is listed on the Government Free courses for jobs list. Similarly, if you already hold a Level 3 qualification (or above) and meet the Adult Education Budgets definition of unemployed or are in receipt of low wage, you may also be entitled to free tuition.

You may also be required to pay an administration fee, exam fees, kit fee and an Awarding Body Registration fee if applicable.
